Archive for December, 2008

I don’t usually post this kind of thing, but my sister came over today and had on a pair of these super cute boots by Simple. She said she got them at a sidewalk sale in Old Town and she wears them all the time… they are “made of recycled stuff.” I, being way into natural fibers and one who recycles everything, inspected them closely. I swore the uppers were made from hemp and the tread was clearly recycled tires. The loops around the buttons seemed obviously to be inner tubes, and the buttons up the sides looked like coconut. While my sister wasn’t completely tuned in to the details, she did find them worthy of buying and like she said, she “wears them all the time” (and where was I during this sidewalk sale??).

I think I want a pair myself!     My sister has the Hemp ones..

Needless to say, I was intrigued. So after she left, I did a quick Google search for Simple Shoes and was launched right into a whole lotta info about their Eco Sneaks and Planet Walkers. Simple has gone “green.” While my idea of green may be a bit different, and possibly a bit more extreme (green does not always equal non-toxic or healthy to either us nor the planet), I am really inspired to see such efforts. This video gives the Simple story, and how they came to their current, greener state. Check it out… you might want a pair too : )

P.S. ~ HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

We are in for an exciting year. REMEMBER to keep it together, and stay close to what is real. The more of us there are that can hold a space of peace and continuity, the better off we will all be, as a whole. I am excited to be alive and happy to be healthy and full of life, everyday.

Crimson Twill

I have just posted one more Blossom Bag in Crimson Red Twill in the shop. This is the very last of this fabric.

A cute little bag, a bit shorter than my usual Blossom Bag design. So grab it if you want it, cuz there won’t be more!

I just received my Eco Ull from AYarnOutlet (who was very nice to work with and has a huge selection of yarns). I purchased 2 skeins of Natural and 2 skeins of Charcoal. It is even more beautiful than hoped! Amazingly soft, buoyant and substantial and I love the natural colors. They have a depth and texture unlike yarn that has been highly processed and dyed. Eco Ull is an eco friendly organic wool with no additives; like carbonization agents, chlorides, softeners, super-wash treatment or other chemicals. The sheep are raised and the wool is harvested in Germany, within the guidelines for ecological agriculture under the EU Regulation. It is certified by Skal International. The yarn is made only in the natural colors of the wool itself.

I also could not resist purchasing this skein of Ultra Alpaca. It is a blend of Alpaca and Peruvian Highland wool, in a beautiful shade of tuquoisey teal, which I love.

Can’t wait to get my hands into this!

Hello friends! I’m still here! I hope you all have had a relaxing, rejuvenating and peaceful holiday. We have been enjoying rowdy, stormy, windy, rainy weather on the coast. I think I am almost rested. I was amazed how tired I was when I finally let myself just stop and rest.

During this restful time, I started a small knitting project.

Just by chance, I found a teeny tiny selection of wool yarn in Fred Meyer’s craft section – so small I have missed it in the past. I could not pass up buying a couple, as I have been impatiently waiting for some eco wool I ordered on etsy to arrive. Shown is Lion Brand’s Ranch Red. I like it. Rich and red and deep and festive. And wool, of course : )

Yesterday I shipped off the last of the Christmas deadline orders. If you have not received your order yet, you will very very soon! All US First Class mailings were upgraded to Priority, free of charge. The mail seems to be running on time, and I know there is not as much mailing going on as in past years (there weren’t even lines at our post office this week!).  I spent the later afternoon resting and refreshing and I must admit I felt a bit hungover, oddly restless, and mostly just plain tired. This has been an exciting and satisfying season and I am so grateful to each of you, my very supportive and appreciative customers.

Ordering supplies is an ongoing, necessary task in keeping up with a sewing business (or any business for that matter). At first, this task seemed like a big interruption from my flow (and still can at times) due to it’s sometimes time-consuming nature. Fortunately, I have since found a few suppliers that I can return to again and again.

Kung Fu Cowgirl, by far, makes the ordering and receiving of supplies the most fun and easy ever! I found her etsy shop quite some time ago while looking for zippers. She has an incredible selection of zippers, in many colors and sizes, which she keeps well stocked. Her orders ship FAST, her shipping rates are excellent, and she is always super responsive to questions and requests for custom orders.

As a fun addition, she includes little treats in every package (like the big kelley green heart ring above! or the hedgehog and fruit friend below on my cork board). In her shop you will also find other supplies, as well as cute zippy pouches made with kawaii inspired fabrics, pocket mirrors, magnets and more. Check out Kung Fu Cowgirl (AND support a mom in being home with her kids)!

Thank you Kung Fu Cowgirl, for making ordering supplies so fun and easy!

Florence Holiday Market

Today was the first of 2 days of the Florence Holiday Market. It was a fun time, though pretty quiet in terms of shopper flow. I did sell a few things and came out well ahead, which was satisfying. I also purchased a few things which was, in some ways, even more satisfying. There were hand carved wooden utensils made with local woods, which were beautiful and one has made it home with us. There was incredible and very interesting jewelry like I may have never seen before, handcrafted smudges and herbal incense, hand blown glass art, home baked treats, jams and pesto, incredible raw fudge and crackers amongst other things. We also had some very interesting and well improvised musical talent – from hand drum to saxophone to mandolin. Loved it. The Blossom Bag and Wristlets were the favorites among my customers. It was fun to see people check things out in person.

We saw friends we haven’t seen in a while and made some new friends. The kids had a blast and brought a refreshing life to the event. My sister and her 2 little ones came. They are always a treat for me to see! My nephew commandeered one of the musician’s drums and he and his sister participated in the entertainment…

These kinds of events are such a wonderful shift from the day to day. Always a gentle reminder of the importance of supporting, enjoying, appreciating and sharing with one another.

I’ve been blogged, and blogged again today!

If you’d like to learn a little more about me (blush), I have been interviewed, twice, and they have both been posted today!

CraftySynergy, is a “collection of interviews with inspiring artists.” Patricia, owner of this great blog, contacted me a couple weeks ago requesting an interview. Of course, I happily said yes! CraftySynergy has featured many wonderful artists and the interviews are indeed inspiring and interesting reads. I recognized some, and have found quite a few great new artists through her blog. I am totally honored to be featured among such talent.

Sarah, author of the blog StellaJade (as well as mom, jewelery designer, crafter and nicest person ever) also contacted me a short time ago requesting an interview. Again, I happily said yes and am so glad I did as Sarah has been such a nice person to work with.

And, my Blossom Bag in Hemp Silk Herringbone was featured on Scoutiegirl’s Friday Scout Out

I should SO not be blogging right now, as I have SO much work to do, and tomorrow is the first Saturday of the Holiday Market, but I am pretty excited… and overtired, a bit overwhelmed (happily overwhelmed), wishing I had a nice hot cup of coffee in hand…. and that I had about 6 more hands.
